For a typical degree student, studying for a 3 year degree in England, staying in university accommodation for their first year before switching to private, rented accommodation the cost is now £49,441. This figure excludes course materials, food, entertainment and transport.
Is it worth it? That depends on a range of factors including the subject taken and the university attended. Salaries can also vary between men and women and between people from different backgrounds.
Research suggests 20% of graduates who were eligible for free school meals achieved earnings in the top 20% of the population - compared to just under 50% of graduates who attended private schools.
